Ecuador's city of Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was established in the Azuay province back in 1557. Museo Remigio Crespo Toral, located at 707 Calle Larga and Borrero Street in Cuenca, was named for the renowned Ecuadorian poet “Remigio Crespo Toral”. An exceptional poet, Remigio Crespo Toral lived between 1860 and 1939 and was also known as an author, journalist, educator and lawyer. Although the museum may bear his name, the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum is concerned with the history of Ecuador and more specifically of Cuenca. Construction on Cuenca museum began in 1910 and was completed in 1917. The building was originally the home of Remigio Crespo Toral.

Inside the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum visitors will discover some 8 000 pieces of archaeological significance. Amongst these are gold items from the Cañar and Chordeleg cultures as well as ceramics from the pre-Hispanic era. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the collection of colonial paintings and religious artworks that take the form of both paintings and sculptures. Artworks include those created by Velez, Sangurima and Alvarado. Also interesting is the Museo Remigio Crespo Toral’s coin collection. This outstanding museum in Cuenca also serves as the city’s historical archives, possessing a library with publications from the 19th and 20th century. For the convenience of visitors to the Remigio Crespo Toral Museum, the exhibitions have been divided into four sections. These are: Historical Documents, Archeology, Cuenca’s Independence and Cuenca’s Foundation.

The impressive museum is open on Mondays to Fridays from 08:30 am to 01:00 pm and 03:00 pm to 06:30 pm as well as on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 01:00 pm.
