Quito’s Independence Day Celebrations in August
During the month of August, the streets of Quito come alive with color, music, concerts, parades, cultural exhibitions and festivities. It is all in celebration of Quito’s Independence Day that falls on 10 August. This date is not exclusively Quito’s Independence Day, as it is celebrated throughout most of the country, as Ecuador’s Independence Day as well. The city of Quito is where independence for Ecuador began, the day Ecuadorians rose up and started to take back their country.
Yamor Festivities – An Exciting Blend of Traditions
There are many reasons to visit the beautiful city of Otavalo in Ecuador. The surrounding mountains, breath-taking landscapes and temperate weather add to the appeal of the city, which is located north of Quito in the Northern Sierra. Here visitors are sure to gain a true understanding of Ecuadorian people and their culture. Otavalo is well known for the Indigenous handcrafts market, which is held each Saturday, offering myriads of handcrafted items, attracting tourists and visitors by the score. At the beginning of September each year, locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the Yamor festivities which are held in Otavalo.
Francisco Pizarro – Hero to Some, Enemy to Others
If you look in the history book of Ecuador, one Spanish name in particular will stand out – that of Francisco Pizarro González. In fact, his name reappears frequently in much of the history surrounding the Spanish conquest of South America, and some even label Pizarro as the ‘conqueror of the Inca Empire’ or as the ‘founder of Lima’.
