Just off the coast of Ecuador is an archipelago of islands that was made famous in 1831 by the legendary Charles Darwin. It is an attraction that sees to it that travel agencies and tour operators in Ecuador remain busy. And even though the tourism industry might be good for businesses on the mainland, it is not helping the residents of the Galapagos Islands. Specifically, the most populated island, Santa Cruz. Organizations such as Galapagos ICE strive to enhance the living conditions of the islanders and protect the endangered wildlife with which they share their islands.

On the 3rd of July 2009, the news that Jorge Enrique Adoum had passed away rocked the people of Ecuador. He was not only a Politian and Diplomat, but hailed as one of the best poets in the history of Ecuador. His work has inspired many and his words have left a legacy of a full and colorful life. His passing has left many citizens of Ecuador at a loss and his absence will most definitely be felt in literary circles. Jorge Enrique Adoum carved his name into the history of the country and will always be fondly remembered.

Benjamin Carrion (1897-1979) was a tireless supporter of Ecuadorian culture, which he went to great lengths to promote. He was the founder and first President of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana (The House of the Ecuadorian Culture) situated in Quito, which to this day is a center focused on the development and maintenance of authentic national culture, welcoming visitors to view the exhibitions, film screenings, dance performances and many other exciting events held there.

Most countries experience some degree of rivalry between different regions or their larger cities like New York and Los Angeles, Tokyo and Osaka, and so on. Often these rivalries are played out - literally - on the sports field. On one notable occasion, however, a sports rivalry blew up into war between nations. This was the so-called “Soccer War” between Honduras and El Salvador in 1969.
