EcoRuta

The EcoRuta, or EcoRoute, also known as the Hummingbirds’ Way (El Paseo Del Quinde), is one of the most inspiring and picturesque routes to explore, to discover the beauty and diversity of the fauna and flora of Ecuador. Many are not aware of the overwhelming number of wildlife species that can be found in the country, such as over three hundred reptile species, one thousand six hundred bird species, more than two hundred and fifty mammal species and thousands of butterflies. To experience the magnificence of the landscapes of Ecuador, the EcoRuta is a recommended activity.

Of course there is a tarred road route from Quito to the dense forests in the northwest, but the EcoRoute winds through three ecosystems, adding to the variety of wildlife to be seen, which are found according to habitat. Most of the route takes hiking enthusiasts through protected wildlife areas and private reserves, guaranteeing tranquil surroundings and untouched splendor. Lodges found along the EcoRoute also offer horse riding as a form of transport for those who are weary from their hiking adventure, or provide mountain bikes for those who prefer cycling.

There are also many noteworthy sites and attractions along the way, over and above the wildlife and magical cloudforests, waterfalls and rolling grasslands. Tubing and Canopy Zipline tours offer visitors a break from hiking and an opportunity to explore the trail from a different point of view. Archaeological sites such as the ruins of Tulipe, butterfly farms and trout farms are great educational attractions and some lodges offer educational tours to schools or tour groups. For years now, avid bird watching enthusiasts have flocked to Ecuador and the EcoRuta, as they seek the wonderful photographic opportunities the country offers and being able to view such a vast variety of different species. One of the most popular bird watching areas is a mere hour outside of Quito, in the Choco-Andean biological corridor, which was zoned by the Birdlife International to be an IBA (Area of International Importance for Birds).

Nature lovers and thrill seekers will find relaxation, wonder and adventure on the EcoRuta and is an attraction that the entire family can enjoy. When in Ecuador, be sure to take time out to explore the EcoRoute, or even just a part of it, as it will be an unforgettable experience.
