Hi there,
I have to do a presentation in school on Christmas in Ecuador. Does anyone have some information that could help me out? Info on traditions, food and differences between an Ecuadorean and traditional English/American Christmas would be very useful.

Christmas in Ecuador is celebrated not very differently from other catholic countries. The following are the most important traditions:

"Novena": nine nigths before Christmas, families or friends gather each night in a different house to pray the "Rosario" and to sing Christmas Carrols.

"Posadas": much like the "Novenas" but without the praying of the "Rosario".

"Nacimiento": besides the Christmas Tree, families also put in their households the "Nacimiento" which is the setting of a scene of Jesus´s birth, made out of small figures from Joseph, Mary, the Holy Child, the "Pesebre" (where Jesus was born) the Three Kings, etc.

"Pase del Niño": in some towns in the inner provinces, people still have this ancient tradition, inherited from Spain. It can be translated to "the Ride of the Child??". People take the image of the Niño (Baby Jesus) from the "Nacimiento" from the towns´main church and walk with this image through the main street singing Christmas Carrols.

"Misa de Gallo" on Christmas Eve, the 24th, we usually attend a special Christmas Mass at midnight.

After the Mass, families and extended families (aunts, uncles, cousins, and a laaarge etc.) gather together, usually in the house of the oldest member (grandma and grandpa), to have a special dinner made out of turkey or a roasted pork leg, stuffing and "Pan de Pascua" with cocoa. "Pan de Pascua" is a sweet bread, filled with tiny fruit pieces, raisins ,etc. At this moment (after midnight) families interchange gifts. Kids go to sleep and to wait for the "Niñito" (Holy Baby Jesus) and "Papá Noel" (or San Nicolás, Santa Claus) to bring toys and presents during the night for them.

This is more or less how we celebrate Christmas, hope I helped.

PS: However, we in Ecuador celebrate New Year in a much different way then from the rest of the world!! It is a blast, and I am pretty sure that no other country has ever done something like this! If you ever wonder how we do this, post a message.

Thank you for your help. I know a small amount about new year in Ecuador, the burning of 'anos viejos' etc, but information about this as well would be most useful
