Fascinating Punto Ayora
If you are looking for something a little different from usual for your next trip to Ecuador, look no further than Punto Ayora. This beautiful little town may not seem to have much on offer, but it really is the perfect place to relax and unwind. As it doesn't suffer from the ravages of streams of tourists and the resulting traffic, noise and over-development, Punto Ayora is simply a dreamy little town where you can enjoy the many wonders of nature completely undisturbed.
For starters, Punto Ayora has a wonderfully historic side to it as it is filled with picturesque ruins that are more reminiscent of Italy than they are of Spain. This is because the town was once used as a Roman stronghold - though it has long since been abandoned. To this day many ruins from this time in the city's history can be found. There are also a number of paintings that depict horses and people from that time period. These beautiful ruins are offset by slowly degrading mountain strongholds and beautiful mountain scenery. The nearby striking peaks are often covered in cloud – reminding one of the almost extreme elevations that can be found all over Ecuador. Many of the older buildings in the town have been built in typical Spanish colonial style, complete with graceful arches, small roofed domes and paved plazas. These are often times complimented by some of the neatest and most superb gardens you will find in Ecuador.
Another aspect of Punto Ayora that is very enjoyable is the fact that the people of the town regularly celebrate a number of great festivals. There are three main festivals worth noting – the San Andres, the Santo Angel Tutelary of Villa de Ayora and the Virgin of Asuncion. The first two last only a day and take place on the 31st of October and the second Monday of January respectively. The third festival lasts for a week during August. So, whether you are looking for a great place to relax or you want to get better acquainted with the many historical attractions in this beautiful little town, come to Punto Ayora and discover a part of Ecuador that you likely never knew existed.
