So it is that I find myself taking the Land Rover to the Cotopaxi National Park laden with equipment and towing a trailer stacked with bales of alfalfa. The Land Rover, undoubtedly once a fine machine, is around forty years old and like many things here displays many idiosyncratic qualities. Vague steering, vague gears and even vaguer brakes - to drive her (particularly on the regions rather testing roads) is an interesting experience. Back home she would have long ago been consigned to the breakers yard, but here she continues to chug on thanks to the skills of local mechanics who simply refuse to give up on vehicles that have reached the end of their planned life. This ability to patch and mend things that we would years previously have consigned to the dump is, of course, largely born of necessity. With forty seven percent of the population of Ecuador living on or below the poverty line it is simply not a viable option for many here to be as profligate as we in the West. In towns and villages - even in Quito itself - it is possible to have most things repaired and mended; from cars and tools to toasters and telephones it is likely that you can find someone who is prepared to give it ...
