The cathedral began construction in the 16th century and was made with two entryways, typical of Spanish design. One of the entrances opens up to La Plaza Grande, while the other leads to Garcia Moreno road. Though the Spanish custom is for the primary facade to face the plaza, a ravine forced the main facade of the church to open to the road. The church's interior is adorned with work from the Quito School of Art and is lit by impressive skylights that cover the domes of the naves. The stark white exterior of the church is an emblem of Quito and reflects the traditional Spanish architecture of the city.
