Ecuador's geography was provided in part by, Discovery Network TV. The Land of ice and fire Ecuador straddles the Equator on the Pacific coast of South America, and is bordered by Colombia to the north and Peru to the south and east. Despite its small size Ecuador is one of the world's most varied countries, making it possible to experience astonishingly different landscapes in a single day. At 283560 sq km, Ecuador is about the size of New Zealand or the US state of Nevada, and it's somewhat larger than the UK. The country is divided into four regions. The dramatic Andean mountain range runs roughly north to south and splits the country into the western costal lowlands and the eastern jungles of the Amazon Basin. The valley nestled between them was appropriately dubbed "The Avenue of Volcanoes" by the German explorer Alexander von H Humboldt, who visited the country in 1802. Ecologists have labeled Ecuador one of the world's megadiversity hotspot. The tiny nation is one of the most species- rich countries on the planet.
