Peace Corps 30-Second Summary [00:37]
As I return from the Peace Corps, I am being asked the obvious but difficult question, "So, how was it?" After observing a few eyes-glazed-over expressions and a couple conspicuous glances down at a smartphone when I detail the improvements my community made to their queso fresco cheese, I decided to prepare this 30-second summary instead. Thanks to the US Peace Corps and to my friends in Ecuador for a very rewarding two years. Gracias a Cuerpo de Paz y mis amigos ecuatorianos por unos dos años muy gratificantes.

Pyramids Ecuador - Cochasquí / unedited [00:28]
Pyramids in Ecuador - open to public. The entire compound was - until recently - owned by a single family. It is currently under the care of the government of Ecuador and open to the public. The "main" or "most central" structure was dug up (in a most unprofessional way / utterly destroyed) before the family gave the property over to the government of Ecuador. When asked if they found anything the family member in question became nervous and skirted the question. Laughing we can openly discuss the gold they must have unearthed. Officially no gold was found. Nonetheless artifacts did/do? abound in and around this site. On a personal note, highly relevant archaeological sites abound everywhere we have dug in Ecuador. "Grave?" sites along the coast near Bahia have been approximately 30 meters deep. Other pyramids look like those featured in these videos - earthen mounts or hills, covered in vegetation.

New Year's Eve Ecuador [01:10]
At midnight on New Year's eve, effigies made of stuffed dummies w/ masks or paper mache are burned. The effigies symbolize an situation or idea or person that you despise and wish to get rid of in the new year. Here, an entire Smurf village is about to go down in flames in Cuenca, Ecuador. And I have to agree... who doesn't hate The Smurfs?

The Wao Welcome Mask in the Yasuni (Full Version) [05:22]
The Waorani are Amerindians from the Amazonian Region of Ecuador (Napo, Orellana and Pastaza Provinces) who have marked differences from other ethnic groups from Ecuador. The entire Yasuni Biosphere Reserve region is ancestral Waorani territory, which extends from the Napo River on the north and west, down to the Curaray River in the south and eastward into Peru (map). This vast territory, which stretches over 20 000 km2, underlies the current limits of Yasuni National Park and the Waorani Ethnic Reserve Information on Waorani history and distribution prior to the twentieth century is scarce and speculative The Waorani were traditionally a highly mobile, semi-nomadic population of hunter-gatherer horticulturalists. They lived in four warring and widely dispersed groups located on hilltops away from major rivers; the headwaters of the Tiputini River constituted the core of ancestral Waorani territory. Other indigenous groups, mainly the Zaparos, lived along the Tiputini and Curaray rivers in essence surrounding the Waorani. When the Zaparos were suddenly decimated by disease and violent displacement during the rubber boom that hit the region in the late 1800s, the Waorani were able to expand their territory northward to the Napo and southward to the Upper Curaray and Villano rivers. Waorani territory likely reached its greatest extent at the beginning of 20th century . At least two lines of evidence suggest that the Waorani were quite isolated, even from other indigenous ...
