The historical center -- or 'old town,' as it's called -- is a maze of colonial splendor, an Unesco World Heritage Site since 1978. However, Quito unfortunately has an unpleasant side, notably corruption and violence against tourists. It's recommended to especially take care in the evening when visiting this historic capital.
