Wild Woolly Monkey in the Yasuni [00:20]
Woolly monkeys are found throughout the northern countries of South America (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Peru). They usually reside in high elevation cloud forests, seasonally flooded rainforests and forests which situated within Colombia's eastern plains region, although their ideal habitat resides in humid and mature tropical forests. The species lives in social groups ranging from 10 to 45 individuals. Foraging groups, however, tend to consist of 2 to 6 individuals which branch out from the main group, and this is probably intended to reduce food competition among individuals. Woolly monkeys have a diet which consists of fruit with an addition of leaves, seeds, flowers and invertebrates. Each group is governed and led by an Alpha male, and the social organization within a larger group is organized by age, sex, and the reproductive status of females. Reproduction in these groups is characterized by promiscuity, in other words one male (either the alpha or subordinate) will mate with more than one female, just as females will mate with more than one male. Shortly after the females reach maturity they leave their natal (birth) groups to avoid any occurrence of inbreeding, while males tend to remain in their natal groups. Magnificent Frigatebirds on Isla De La Plata [00:41]
On our trip to Puerto Lopez, we visited Isla De La Plata, Ecuador. It's the home to an amazing number of bird species including the Magnificent Frigatebird. Watch as a colony of frigates fly and swoop. Notice how the males have a red pouch under their beaks that is inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate.

Mike and I never had it planned in our budget for both of us to go, but for me it sounded too good to pass up. After all, I teach Biology for goodness sake. So as I went crazy over seeing evolution in action and being the geeky girl in the group bringing my species and taxonomy checklist and a notepad to take notes, Mike came along and enjoyed it also. I`m so glad he did. Getting There...I was a little nervous because Mike still hadn´t received his passport. Many agencies say that they check your passport upon entering Galapagos even though you are still in Ecuador. So we came prepared...police report and forms from the Embassy. No problem. We left from Guayaquil, Ecuador by plane on a 2 hour flight over the Pacific Ocean, then landed on Baltra Island (one of the many in Galapagos). We were both excited getting this great last minute deal for 8 days on a luxury yacht only days before. After bussing across Baltra we take a ferry to The Charles Darwin Research Station. This meant going to San Cristobal Island, and getting away from the animals for a while whilst we explored the Galapagos Visitor centre, which explained the origins of the islands, its wildlife (endemic, native and introduced) and the environmental issues affecting the islands. The most dramatic of these was the impact of us as tourists, who now outnumber the local population. Add to this the carelessness of man by bringing verminous creatures and livestock that endanger the ecosystem and animals and man's own historic greed in wiping out species of tortoises by using their oils as fuels! It brought home the delicate nature of the island, and positively informed us of the measures taken to eradicate the infesting introduced species, and curbing of local population growth. Tourism must bring in too much money for the government to sanction against - but I wouldn't be surprised on forthcoming restrictions being placed. In an awkward way, I felt lucky we had a chance to see the islands. After lunch, we headed to Isla Lobos to reacquaint ourselves with familiar sea-lions and iguanas.
