Located near the main street of Puerto Ayora, it is conveniently accessible while being set apart from the busy activity of the town. Mainao has lovely outdoor open areas within the hotel to wander in and relax. A former tour guide, the owner has utilized his knowledge of tourists needs to thoroughly equip his hotel. From a holiday retreat, Mainao has grown to a hotel with ten rooms three single, three double/matrimonial, two triples, one quadruple and a suite with an ocean view. A continental breakfast is served every morning using organic products from local farms. Originally, the hostel was a house for the owners 2 daughters, Maile and Naori, There were 6 rooms and the idea was to have a place to share holiday times with them. As time passed by, they became more independent and the house grew quiet and empty. This led to the idea of a place to accommodate the Santa Cruz growing tourist population. Making the most of its strategic location, the Mainao offers a comfortable stay, away from the downtown hustle and bustle. Throughout experience as tour guides, have come to understand the tourists expectations in terms of service and infrastructure, and have applied these to the hotel. Tsáchila Cleansing Ceremony [03:27]
Several University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student Optimist Club members traveled to Ecuador to participate in a number of service learning projects. Part of the experience was, of course, to learn something of the local cultures. A highlight was the visit to an indigenous Tsáchila village in Ecuador's northern coastal rainforest. The Tsáchilas are noted for their unique hairstyle fashioned by mixing oils with the ground seeds of the Achiote plant. The group, according to various sources on the Web, numbers about 2000--but the local shaman says that there are only about 700 native speakers of the Tsáchila language. The spiritual cleansing of individuals by the shaman is a key part of the culture, and we had the opportunity to participate in a cleansing ceremony. The video shows key elements of the ceremonial cleansing process.

Doctors make house calls in Ecuador. Dentists clean your teeth themselves. You can usually see a doctor or dentist the same day or the day after you call for an appointment. Health care costs about one tenth what it costs in the USA. This video interview is of a retired couple in Ecuador. The stories they share are typical. I myself had health care in Quito and Cuenca. In each case it was cheap, fast, and I would say even better than in the USA.
