This meant going to San Cristobal Island, and getting away from the animals for a while whilst we explored the Galapagos Visitor centre, which explained the origins of the islands, its wildlife (endemic, native and introduced) and the environmental issues affecting the islands. The most dramatic of these was the impact of us as tourists, who now outnumber the local population. Add to this the carelessness of man by bringing verminous creatures and livestock that endanger the ecosystem and animals and man's own historic greed in wiping out species of tortoises by using their oils as fuels! It brought home the delicate nature of the island, and positively informed us of the measures taken to eradicate the infesting introduced species, and curbing of local population growth. Tourism must bring in too much money for the government to sanction against - but I wouldn't be surprised on forthcoming restrictions being placed. In an awkward way, I felt lucky we had a chance to see the islands. After lunch, we headed to Isla Lobos to reacquaint ourselves with familiar sea-lions and iguanas. Ecuador's geography was provided in part by, Discovery Network TV. The Land of ice and fire Ecuador straddles the Equator on the Pacific coast of South America, and is bordered by Colombia to the north and Peru to the south and east. Despite its small size Ecuador is one of the world's most varied countries, making it possible to experience astonishingly different landscapes in a single day. At 283560 sq km, Ecuador is about the size of New Zealand or the US state of Nevada, and it's somewhat larger than the UK. The country is divided into four regions. The dramatic Andean mountain range runs roughly north to south and splits the country into the western costal lowlands and the eastern jungles of the Amazon Basin. The valley nestled between them was appropriately dubbed "The Avenue of Volcanoes" by the German explorer Alexander von H Humboldt, who visited the country in 1802. Ecologists have labeled Ecuador one of the world's megadiversity hotspot. The tiny nation is one of the most species- rich countries on the planet.
