Lima Peru 2012 Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings) Part 3 [05:48]
Lima is the capital and the largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, in the central part of the country, on a desert coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Together with the seaport of Callao, it forms a contiguous urban area known as the Lima Metropolitan Area. With a population approaching 9 million, Lima is the fourth largest city in South America. Tsáchila Cleansing Ceremony [03:27]
Several University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student Optimist Club members traveled to Ecuador to participate in a number of service learning projects. Part of the experience was, of course, to learn something of the local cultures. A highlight was the visit to an indigenous Tsáchila village in Ecuador's northern coastal rainforest. The Tsáchilas are noted for their unique hairstyle fashioned by mixing oils with the ground seeds of the Achiote plant. The group, according to various sources on the Web, numbers about 2000--but the local shaman says that there are only about 700 native speakers of the Tsáchila language. The spiritual cleansing of individuals by the shaman is a key part of the culture, and we had the opportunity to participate in a cleansing ceremony. The video shows key elements of the ceremonial cleansing process.
