Lonesome George...Trip to the Galapagos Islands, June 2010 [00:46]
I visited the Darwin Research station in as one of my itinerary in the trip to the Galapagos Islands in June 2010. I personally saw the remaining species of this tortoise called "Lonesome George." Lonesome George (Spanish: Solitario Jorge) is the last known individual of the Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni), which is one of eight to fifteen extant subspecies of Galápagos tortoise, all of which are native to the Galápagos Islands.[1][2] He has been labeled the rarest creature in the world, and he is a potent symbol for conservation efforts in the Galápagos and conservation efforts internationally.[3] It is thought that he was named after a character played by American actor George Gobel. George was first seen on the island of Pinta on 1 December 1971 by Hungarian malacologist József Vágvölgyi. The island's vegetation had been devastated by introduced feral goats, and the indigenous G. n. abingdoni population had been reduced to a single individual. Relocated for his safety to the Charles Darwin Research Station, George was penned with two females of a different subspecies, but although eggs have been produced, none has hatched. George is estimated to be about 100 years of age, and he is in good health.[4] A prolonged effort to exterminate goats introduced to Pinta is now complete, and the vegetation of the island is starting to return to its former state. The presence of mixed race Pinta ancestry tortoises around Wolf Volcano, on neighbouring Isabela ...

Common Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha) in the Yasuni [00:34]
Common woolly monkeys (Lagothrix lagotricha) occur in the Neotropics of northern South America, including the upper Magdalean River valley in Colombia, throughout much of the upper Amazon basin of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil west of the Rio Negro, and in the foothills and eastern slopes of the Andes. They occur as high as 3000 meters above sea level in the Andes (Eisenberg 1989; Emmons & Feer 1990; Moynihan 1976). Common woolly monkeys are hardly ever found on the forest floor. Generally, they remain at a height of about 38 ft (12 m) but will come down as low as 22 ft (7m). Lagothrix lagotricha live in gallery, palm, flooded and nonflooded primary, and cloud forests. These animals prefer mature, continuous, undisturbed humid forests and are not found to inhabit secondary forest. (Kinzey, 1997; Nowak, 1999; Welker and Schafer-Witt, 1989) Physical Description Mass 3 to 10 kg (6.6 to 22 lbs) Length 558 to 686 mm (21.97 to 27.01 in) Common wooly monkeys are large robust animals and are one of the largest New World primates by weight. Males are generally heavier than females, and male canine teeth are significantly larger than those of females. When in captivity these animals can be much heavier in weight than 10 kg but usually individuals fall within the range of 3 to 10 kg. Head and body length ranges from 558 to 686 mm and the prehensile tail is between 600 to 720 mm. The hair is dense, short, thick, and predominantly composed of underfur. In older individuals ...

Early in the morning, we`ll visit the Napo Wild Life Center, which belongs to the Kichwa community of Anango, found within the park and considered by the rainforest alliance as the best Lodge (Jungle Hotel) in the world. We`ll visit two salting spots where flocks of different species of parrots come to feed on salt and lime, a substantial component of the diet of these animals. We`ll see in the first spot up to 8 species of parrots , that form groups of up to 800 individuals, and in the second, more than 12 species that form groups of up to 800 and more birds. Then we will enter in small indigenous canoes through the narrow channels in the middle of the jungle to the lagoon of Añango and the Hotel Napo Wilde Life Center.
