Galapagos Islands ... a short stay! [04:46]
Another part of our South American adventure in October 2011 was a visit to the Galapagos Islands, nearly 700 miles off the coast of Ecuador. It really is the most wonderful part of the world, virtually unspoiled and a magical environment for seeing nature and wildlife in it's element. We stayed for 3 nights aboard the Santa Cruz and visited 6 of the main islands. Magnificent Frigatebirds on Isla De La Plata [00:41]
On our trip to Puerto Lopez, we visited Isla De La Plata, Ecuador. It's the home to an amazing number of bird species including the Magnificent Frigatebird. Watch as a colony of frigates fly and swoop. Notice how the males have a red pouch under their beaks that is inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate.

Isla Salango and Isla de la Plata, Ecuador [04:28]
Check the previous video for the dolphins. Here's a look at some of the non-dolphin animals off the coast of Ecuador including whales, frigates, and, of course, the famous blue-footed boobies. This includes the rest of the Isla De La Plata tour as well as some whale watching off the coast of Isla Salango. The whales were pretty elusive. They would come up about every 10 minutes real quickly to grab a breath of air and it was hard to predict where they would be to get a close-up. And we couldn't get too close because they would have destroyed our little boat. But Isla Salango was worth it. We all sneaked onto the island illegally and had a nice, relaxing little beach party on the deserted island. I couldn't bring the camera for that though since we had to anchor the boat about a block off the shore and swim in. I thought I'd drown in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Good times.
