"Tagua de Wilson" in Banos de Agua Santa, Ecuador [06:01]
The South American ivory palm name is Phytelephas aequatorialis, and it thrives between Paraguay and Panama. A full-grown tagua tree can reach 65 feet (20 meters) in height. Like true ivory, tagua is dense and creamy white-yellow in color, and it can be carved and worked into buttons, carvings, musical instrument parts, and other things traditionally made from ivory.
