Freyal's travel blog entry: "We arrived in Quito, Ecuador and caught a taxi straight to the Secret Garden Hostel in the old town!! We were buzzed into the entrance and heard a voice shouting from above asking us if we were checking in. We then hauled our backpacks up the many flights of stairs and blamed the puffing on the altitude!! Quito is situated high in the Andes at about 2850m above sea level and is surrounded in part by the walls of a volcano. The hostel is four levels with an awesome roof top balcony with a kitchen and terrace with tables and a few hammocks! It has amazing views and looks fantastic particularly at night! The rooms are $11 each and breakfast US$1.75, and dinner somewhere within the $3-4 range - Sooo cheap in this country!! It is very friendly and welcoming with great staff and is actually owned by an Australian guy and his Ecuadorian wife! Highly recommend to anyone who ever travels this way! Tomorrow we are off for some shopping at the markets. So we headed out to the markets with an earlier start at about 7am. As I was going with someone who's motto is shop like you mean it I suspected a few purchases were going to be made despite the fact the backpack really doesn't need anymore in it. Also bear in mind that it is very difficult to take pics of moving animals, we had about 100 tree photos which MAY have an animal in them! Day One After a nice dinner with our lovely Quito family, we caught the overnight bus from Quito to Lago Agrio. It was a pretty bumpy journey - at one point we woke up to find that we weren´t actually driving on a road, just a field of rubble. Arrived at Lago Agrio early and met our guide Jairo, who was an Ecuadorian version of Tarzan. It was just the two of us on a massive rickety bus which took us to El Puente in 3 hours where we had lunch before going into the Cuyabeno reserve. From there, a motorized canoe took us for 2 hours to Samona lodge. On the boat ride we saw lots of animals - lots of monkeys jumping through the trees which were often over our heads (see video), toucans, blue butterflies and pink river dolpins. The lodge was amazing - we stayed in wooden huts with palm tree roofs and everything was on stilts. There was only electricity in the kitchen so everything else was lit by candlelight at night (so ofcourse it was cold Amazon water showers for us!). See the sun rise, the sun set and 180 degrees of ocean view all day long. This property is one of the best locations in quiet Ancon, Ecuador. The main lot is about 10000 square feet, with about 3000 square feet construction. The historic home is the typcial style built by the Englishmen who came to Ancon decades to work in the petroleum industry. It features high ceilings, wood floors, large rooms, glass pane windows and a wrap around porch. Most of the interior is in very good condition. This includes living room, dining room, breakfast kitchen, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and den. The original eat in kitchen could use remodeling and the exterior a facelift (new coat of paint, landscaping). With the low cost of labor here in Ecuador those upgrades are well worth the investment. As a bonus the owner is willing to sell the adjoining 10000 square foot vacant beachfront lot, bringing the total land area to about 20000 square feet. If you want quiet small town life, with excellent views and easy access to shopping, dining and other ammenities, look to Ancon.
