Ecuador, der kleinste der Andenstaaten, liegt am Pazifik und grenzt im Norden an Kolumbien und im Osten und Süden an Peru. Die Anden durchziehen das Land von Nord nach Süd. Der Chimborazo (6310 m) ist der höchste Berg. Das Hochland (Sierra) wird durch zwei in Nord-Südrichtung verlaufende, aus 30 Vulkanen gebildete Hochgebirgszüge geprägt: die Westkordillieren (Cordillera Real) und die Ostkordillieren (Cordillera Oriental).
