Screaming Piha (Lipaugus vociferans) [00:34]
The Screaming Piha (Lipaugus vociferans) is a species of bird in the Cotingidae family. It is found in humid forests in the Amazon and tropical parts of the Mata Atlântica in South America. As it is widespread and generally fairly common, it is considered to be of least concern by BirdLife International. While the plumage of both sexes is dull grey (wings and tail often somewhat browner), its voice is extraordinary, exceptionally loud and among the most commonly heard sounds in the Amazon. The Cofan people of Ecuador call it the Pwe-pwe Yoh, which is a reference to its voice. Males often gather in loose leks, where they sing to attract females.

The Striped Manakin (Machaeropterus regulus) is a species of bird in the Pipridae family. Striped Manakins are sexually dimorphic, and the males cluster in a lek to attract females. After mating, the females rear the chicks on without the help of the males. It is found in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Hier moest ik op de rest van de groep wachten die me in de boot zou vergezellen naar Isla de la Plata. Zij hoopten walvissen tegen te komen onderweg, maar ik wilde gewoon naar het eiland om te gaan duiken! Zo snel mogelijk het water in, get it over with, die drempel weer over! We zijn geen walvissen tegengekomen, dus waren we al rond 11u30 aan het eiland. Mooi zo. We hebben de 9 anderen gedropt op het eiland en ik ben met mijn duikinstructor/kapitein/buddy (Luis) en de bootsman (José) ietsje verder gevaren naar een plek waar ze vandaag al roggen van 4m hadden gezien. Luis, mijn duikbuddy voor vandaag, heeft alles eerst goed overlopen in de boot, want ik had hem gezegd dat het een jaar geleden was dat ik nog gedoken had. Hij wilde vóór we helemaal naar beneden gingen het legen van de duikbril oefenen en het beademingstoestel onder water uit de mond halen. Prima, zolang ik het maar op voorhand weet! Door zijn uitleg was ik al wat kalmer en wilde ik er aan beginnen. Eerst moest ik me in het volledige wetsuit wringen. Daarbovenop nog eens een halve wetsuit, schoentjes en hoofdkap. Ik was helemaal ingepakt, klaar om de koude in te duiken. De 2 mannen aan boord hebben me zo goed geholpen, ze waren echte schatjes. De eerste duik zakten we ...

Wel leuk dat het echt een uniek schip was en nogal opvalt tussen alle luxe, witte moterjachten. En hoewel het zeker niet goedkoop was is het het geld dubbel en dwars waard geweest!! Je hoort altijd bijzondere verhalen over de Galapagos en nu ik er geweest ben kan ik die verhalen alleen maar beamen!! De dieren die je er ziet zijn sowieso al bijzonder, en uniek voor de Galapagos (ik noem de reuzenschildpadden en bluefooted boobies als meest in het oog springende voorbeelden). Maar daarnaast zijn de dieren ook zo ontzettend tam of misschien beter gezegd niet bang voor mensen, dat je ze letterlijk tot op een meter kunt benaderen en sommige dieren zelfs nog dichter. De groep waarmee we bijna een week hebben doorgebracht was ook echt leuk wat de ervaring nog positiever heeft gemaakt. Op dag 1 zijn we na de lunch naar Tortuga Bay gegaan om hier te gaan snorkelen. Tortuga bay is een prachtig, enigszins afgesloten strand waardoor het water lekker warm is. Onderweg hiernaar toe onze eerste marine-Iguana gezien, een grote hagedis die zich voed met algen (komt alleen voor op de Galapagos).
