Na een lange en vermoeiende vlucht zijn we goed aangekomen in Quito. De eerste dagen hebben we het rustig gehouden aangezien we beiden wat last hadden van de hoogte en jetlag. We hebben even het oude centrum van Quito bezocht. Aangezien we ons echter niet 100% veilig voelden en er niet zoveel te zien was, waren we vlug weer weg... Morgen gaan we op het middelpunt van de wereld staan in El Mitad del mundo. Onze eerste indruk van Quito is dat het ongelofelijk sterk vervuild is en arm. De komende dagen zullen we op een georganiseerde jungle-tour gaan in Cuyabeno. Morgen hebben we een binnenlandse vlucht naar Lago Agrio en van daar gaan we het Amazonewoud verkennen, gewapend met deet en anti-malariapillen :). Na onze terugkeer blijven we nog 2 nachtjes in Quito, om de Cotopaxi-vulkaan te kunnen bezoeken... Hasta luego! Astrid en Ellen English version: Hola todos! Freyal's travel blog entry: "We arrived in Quito, Ecuador and caught a taxi straight to the Secret Garden Hostel in the old town!! We were buzzed into the entrance and heard a voice shouting from above asking us if we were checking in. We then hauled our backpacks up the many flights of stairs and blamed the puffing on the altitude!! Quito is situated high in the Andes at about 2850m above sea level and is surrounded in part by the walls of a volcano. The hostel is four levels with an awesome roof top balcony with a kitchen and terrace with tables and a few hammocks! It has amazing views and looks fantastic particularly at night! The rooms are $11 each and breakfast US$1.75, and dinner somewhere within the $3-4 range - Sooo cheap in this country!! It is very friendly and welcoming with great staff and is actually owned by an Australian guy and his Ecuadorian wife! Highly recommend to anyone who ever travels this way! Tomorrow we are off for some shopping at the markets. So we headed out to the markets with an earlier start at about 7am. As I was going with someone who's motto is shop like you mean it I suspected a few purchases were going to be made despite the fact the backpack really doesn't need anymore in it.
