Gualaceo Ecuador [04:17]
Just 28 Km. east of Cuenca and a world apart. The roads out of Cuenca are wide and modern, but very quickly narrow to a single lane and steep sides of bare rock and lush vegetation. Passing over small, fast, running rivers and streams, the air is clear and crisp, as we get closer to Gualaceo. The architecture of Cuenca is left behind, and we move into buildings that remind me of Austria and northern Italy. As we approach the city, I see that it is placed in a valley that has a single river running into it. The steep sides have buildings clinging onto the hillsides, and the valley fades away between two mountains. There were no low clouds or haze from pollution obstructing my view. I can see how the city has grown, from the main road that cuts through the heart of the old city. To one side, the river forms a natural barrier; on the other side, the sprawl is halted by the steep terrain. The hostal we stayed in was in the center by the mercado where they had general food, meat, and fruit vendors. Also, this is where you can go for your breakfast and lunch. They have delicious local food that I had not experienced in other parts of Ecuador. The hostal was nice- the room was on the third floor; it had a double bed, shower, toilet and a TV. No heating, but for $15.00 a night, what can you expect? It has been a year or more since I have needed to have a blanket to keep me warm. As we arrived in the late afternoon, we checked in and then went driving around to get a feel for the ...

Cajas Nationalpark Ecuador.MOV [00:35]
It´s the 360° view from one of the mountains in the Cajas Nationalpark in South Ecuador. The park is full of little lakes, llamas and has a high altitude tundra ecosystem. Highly recommendable!

Road trip from Salinas to Cuenca Ecuador [07:13]
Background. Cuenca, capital of the province of Azuay, is located in the sierra of the Andes in the Austro or southern region of Ecuador. It is approximately nine hours south of Quito and four hours east of Guayaquil. The city ranges from 2350 to 2550 meters above sea level. The dominant features of the city's geography are also the source of its name in Spanish: the four rivers of Cuenca (meaning a basin made by a confluence of rivers). These rivers are the Tomebamba (named after the Cañari culture), Yanuncay, Tarqui and Machangara, in order of importance. The first three of these rivers originate in the Páramo of Parque Nacional Cajas to the west of the city. These four rivers are part of the Amazon river watershed. Cuenca is surrounded by mountains on all sides, with passes to the west, south and east.

The Andean Region - Ecuador [01:11]
When approaching Quito (the capital city) by air, one can see --weather permitting- why the Andes region was named "The Avenue of the Volcanoes" in the 19th century. The Andes region is home to many indigenous people living in communities scattered throughout the mountains and valleys, while some have already settled in the big cities. Find out more: myde.st
