Gold mining at Playa de Oro - Esmeraldas, Ecuador [01:12]
by Reserva Ecologica Pachijal The ancestors of the people of Playa de Oro were brought to this place (from Africa via Columbia) by a Spaniard who set them to work panning for gold in Rio Santiago. They probably didnt mind the gold panning too much, because they still do a fair amount of it today. But they didn't care much for slavery, and so, in secret, they built a cannon from a very hard black wood. One day when the slave master came paddling up in his canoe to collect the day's nuggets, they blasted him with the cannon, and that was the end of him. (They say the cannon is now in a museum in Guayaquil). Having no way back to Africa, the rebel slaves and their descendants remained there at Playa de Oro. As the furthest community in on Rio Santiago, they had only occasional contacts with the outside world throughout the years

Capilla del Hombre Archeology [02:18]
The Capilla del Hombre, or Man's Chapel, is one of the many legacies of Ecuadorean painter Oswaldo Guayasamin. During the construction of the museum -located in Guayasamin's home- an archeology site was discovered. A walkway protects the area, and it provides a great view of the site.

La Capilla del Hombre [00:28]
The Chapel of Man is a tribute to the human being, mainly to the Latin American people and their suffering, fighting and achievements. Designed by, and filled with the late Oswaldo Guayasamin's artwork this museum is truly unique. It is difficult to get a feeling for the size of this structure from a photograph alone, but I would estimate it to be close to 4 stories high. I have to say that I really enjoyed the structure and artwork, however, I can understand how some would feel his works to be overly macabre.
