Changing of the Guard in Old Town Quito, Ecuador [00:48]
Unlike similar ceremonies in other world capitols, the President of Ecuador is regularly present for the event, waving from the long balcony at the top of the Presidential Palace. In addition to swordsmen on horseback and pikemen, a marching band plays the national anthem and a choir of schoolboys sings along.

"Ecuador, Peru and the Amazon" Randypepper's photos around Iquitos, Peru [02:37]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Iquitos, Peru by TravelPod blogger Randypepper titled "Ecuador, Peru and the Amazon" Randypepper's travel blog entry: "Here's a note on our recent travels as we end the second leg of our tour. We started our Ecuadorian adventure in its capital, Quito. The old town has a pretty square where we got to watch a demonstration urging war against Columbia for its army's attack of FARC guerrillas in Ecuadorian territory. While Quito is just north of the equator, it's in a very high valley so the daytime temperatures seldom go above 22 Centigrade in the winter and it rains most days. A highlight was a visit to the Guayasamin Museum and the Chapel of Humanity which now display the amazing works of Ecuadorian artist, Oswaldo Guayasamin (after his several former wives stopped bickering about where the works were to be displayed). We then flew to the Galapagos islands with our old mates, Frank Archibald, Liz Palatics and their three kids, Joanne, Adrienne and Craig. Had a marvelous week aboard the good ship, Eric, and saw some unusual wildlife. You haven't lived until you've been up close to a boobie! The snorkeling was terrific and included sightings (and sometimes swimming with) sea turtles, sea lions, penguins, manta, eagle and sting rays, octopus, and white-tipped and hammerhead sharks. Some encounters were less than friendly: Craig got a nasty sting from a jelly fish and Adrienne was bitten by a sea lion. At other times ...

"Quito and Otavola - Market day...here we come" Freyal's photos around Quito, Ecuador [02:35]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Quito, Ecuador by TravelPod blogger Freyal titled "Quito and Otavola - Market day...here we come!!" Freyal's travel blog entry: "We arrived in Quito, Ecuador and caught a taxi straight to the Secret Garden Hostel in the old town!! We were buzzed into the entrance and heard a voice shouting from above asking us if we were checking in. We then hauled our backpacks up the many flights of stairs and blamed the puffing on the altitude!! Quito is situated high in the Andes at about 2850m above sea level and is surrounded in part by the walls of a volcano. The hostel is four levels with an awesome roof top balcony with a kitchen and terrace with tables and a few hammocks! It has amazing views and looks fantastic particularly at night! The rooms are $11 each and breakfast US$1.75, and dinner somewhere within the $3-4 range - Sooo cheap in this country!! It is very friendly and welcoming with great staff and is actually owned by an Australian guy and his Ecuadorian wife! Highly recommend to anyone who ever travels this way! Tomorrow we are off for some shopping at the markets. So we headed out to the markets with an earlier start at about 7am. As I was going with someone who's motto is shop like you mean it I suspected a few purchases were going to be made despite the fact the backpack really doesn't need anymore in it. The drive to Otovalo was beautiful through some very scenic mountainous areas. It was also nice to escape some ...
