Amazon Travel: Trying the Local Grub [02:09]
Ecuador Amazon Trip: While visiting the Ecuadorian Amazon, Adventure Life staffer, Julia, and fellow travelers were greeted by members of the local community at Sani Lodge with a welcome dinner -- they tried some of the local "grub" (pun intended). In partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, Adventure Life joined a few other select operators in the Ecuadorian Amazon to review, learn from, and lend insight to the Amazon lodges looking to strengthen sustainability practices.

International Visitors go Hiking in the Rockies [01:49]
In June 2010, College of the Rockies (COTR) hosted guests from Ecuador and Tanzania. For some, it was their first experience with snow! Manuel Burgos, Director of Tourism from University Espiritu Santo (UEES) in Ecuador and three of our guests from the National College of Tourism (NCT) in Tanzania (Ms. Zawadi, Mr. Chiza and Mr. Kobelo), joined local mountain guide and tour operator Dave Quinn for an overnight hiking, snowshoeing and camping trip to Maus Creek in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Rounding out the crew from COTR were coordinators Jeff Cooper, and Brian Conrad who will visit NCT in July 2010 as a project consultant. Here are some highlights from that wonderful trip, including a delightful 'first snow' experience.

Market of Otavalo, Ecuador [06:35]
Otavalo is famous for its textiles. The Saturday market shows the colourful fabrics. Tourism has become the town's main industry and as a result there are many more hotels, hostels, and tour operators than other similarly sized Ecuadorian towns, such as nearby Cayambe. Cotacachi, the center of Ecuador's leather industry, is known for its polished calf skins. Otavaleña women traditionally wear distinctive white embroidered blouses, with flared lace sleeves, and black or dark over skirts, with cream or white under skirts. Long hair is tied back with a 3cm band of woven multi coloured material, often matching the band which is wound several times round their waists. They usually have many strings of gold beads around their necks, and matching tightly wound long strings of coral beads around each wrist. Men wear white trousers, and dark blue ponchos. Otavalo is also known for its Inca-influenced traditional music and musicians. There are many musical groups currently traveling around the world promoting Inca music (sometimes known as Andean New Age). This style of music has had notable commercial success worldwide.

The mountains of the region are home to deposits of nickel and cobalt which have been, and still are being, extensively mined. These industries play an important role in the productivity and wealth of the area, the main nickel mines and processing plants are situated around the town of Moa on the north coast, east of the city of Holguin. Sugar plantations and citrus orchards also play a prominent role in the local economy, and the fishing industry, although small, complements the province's impressive role as a key producer in the Cuban economy. The north coast has been a substantial amount of development over the last 10 to 15 years and the beaches of Playa Guardalavaca are now firmly established with foreign tour operators. Holguin City: This city, 760km/495 miles southeast of Havana, is busy and not particularly attractive. But if you pass through, look in on the main square for its Art-Deco theatre, art gallery, and eclectic display of historical exhibits inside the Museo Provincial. The fine Carlos de la Torre Natural History Museum, just south of the square on Calle Maceo, in another colonial mansion, has a large collection of indigenous snail shells in dazzling colours.
