What a delightful city. So different from Lima and Cuzco - no street vendors/beggars. It is even fairly clean although it also suffers from air pollution. Historic Quito is a National Heritage site-the first city to be so named. Our local guide, Patricio, was informative and funny and willing to discuss controversial subjects. We took a small bus around the town, stopping at a local market with tons of fruit of every imaginable type and size. I saw the biggest berries and grapes ever. I bought a huge bunch of bananas for only a $1. Ecuador uses US dollars so there was no currancy conversion, although they do use their own coins, which look very similar to US coins. The Susan B. Anthony dollar is very common so you need to watch your change. We stopped at a local sorbet shop where it is made by hand. I was able to try my hand at making the sorbet. The fruit juice (with a little bit of water) is placed in a metal bowl that is then placed in a large vat of ice and rock salt. Using a large pastry scraper, the mixture is whipped and scraped.
