Snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands with Sharks [09:01]
In August 2011, I went to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. This is footage we shot while snorkeling off of Isla Isabela. No zoom is used at all, they really get that close! In the video, you can also see giant sea turtles, chocolate chip sea stars, brittle sea stars, sea urchin, sea cucumbers, sand dollars, and various other fish. The sharks are white tip reef sharks, about 5 feet long. They have a unique ventilation system that allows them to remain still while at rest, which is why you can see so many 'sleeping' on the ocean bottom. They like to rest in these lava tubes because the water gets warmer. The tube we swam through was about 8 feet deep, and 3 feet wide. Please note that we were snorkeling with a licensed Parque National Galapagos guide and neither us or the sharks were in any danger.
