Sie liegt südlich von Quito, ihrem Namen entsprechend in einem andinen Hochlandbecken in 2450 bis 2600 m Höhe. Der Tomebamba durchfließt die Stadt, die kleineren Flüsse Machangara, Yanuncay und Tarqui passieren ihren Nord- bzw. Südrand.
