A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Cuenca, Ecuador by TravelPod blogger Minijumboontour titled "The Devil" Minijumboontour's travel blog entry: "This was a great day, I love epic train rides and this one through the Andes really appealed to me from when I first read about it... Basicially the train set out from Riobamba first thing in the morning. It has about 6 carriages, 2 of which are normal seated ones, the other 4 being haulage type ones... So you just turn up at the station at 6am (when it feels like -10 degrees!), put your bag in one of the closed carriages before clambering up a ladder on the outside of the carriage onto the roof. There you just settle yourself down (with cushion you wisely invest $1 in hiring!) amongst the crowds of people. It is quite a strange way to travel, but it really was amazing. Once we´d all thawed out (basicially not til 10am after setting off at 7am!), it improved even more ! Simona and I were sat next to a couple of Scottish students, who´d just spent 6 weeks in the jungle. Fairly understandably, they hadn´t really packed suitable clothing (ie only jeans & jumpers, no coat!) - so despite the expected traditional Scottish hardiness (Herdy excluded, having avoided cold places for virtually all his adult life!) - they probably would have won the award for most freezing people on the train...! Luckily the banana fritters being sold by hawkers wandering up and down the jerking train did seem to warm most people up ...
