Not long until South America now - Eek! Video travel blog number 1 [12:48]
It's February 29th 2012, only 2 days until I fly to Quito, Ecuador for a 10 month trip around South America. Am I organised yet? Even a teeny, tiny, ickle bit prepared? Not a chance. The first of what I hope will be plenty of video blogging whilst I'm away on what I'm sure will be the trip of a lifetime.

Bienvenidos a Peru.wmv [00:46]
Anitclimax is what I found over the Zumba, Ecuador to San Ignacio, Peru border, anticlimax and a surly immigrations officer (here seen in the red shirt) waiting to give me a so-so first impression of his country. From there, things didn´t exactly improve; my driver charged me 50 soles for my ride to San Ignacio, a price I now know to be horribly gringo-inflated. To add insult to financial injury, he crammed in four other guys into the car, so not only was I ripped off, I was ripped off with sweaty elbows jamming into my ribs. But, it happens, and my journey to Iquitos had to start somewhere. I´ve chose to use a route that is not recommended in various tour guides, namely because it´s infrequently traveled and involves so many bus transfers and stops. Being off the beaten trail will be a new experience for me, at least on this trip; here´s hoping all goes well!

"An adventure with the Land Rover" Nomisyespoc's photos around Machachi, Ecuador [00:56]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Machachi, Ecuador by TravelPod blogger Nomisyespoc titled "An adventure with the Land Rover" Nomisyespoc's travel blog entry: "Now back from Uruguay, Sally has three weeks of riding tours here in Ecuador and I am helping out where I can. So it is that I find myself taking the Land Rover to the Cotopaxi National Park laden with equipment and towing a trailer stacked with bales of alfalfa. The Land Rover, undoubtedly once a fine machine, is around forty years old and like many things here displays many idiosyncratic qualities. Vague steering, vague gears and even vaguer brakes - to drive her (particularly on the regions rather testing roads) is an interesting experience. Back home she would have long ago been consigned to the breakers yard, but here she continues to chug on thanks to the skills of local mechanics who simply refuse to give up on vehicles that have reached the end of their planned life. This ability to patch and mend things that we would years previously have consigned to the dump is, of course, largely born of necessity. With forty seven percent of the population of Ecuador living on or below the poverty line it is simply not a viable option for many here to be as profligate as we in the West. In towns and villages - even in Quito itself - it is possible to have most things repaired and mended; from cars and tools to toasters and telephones it is likely that you can find someone who is prepared to give it ...
"The first steps in Ecuador" Astridenellen's photos around Quito, Ecuador [00:54]
A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Quito, Ecuador by TravelPod blogger Astridenellen titled "The first steps in Ecuador" Astridenellen's travel blog entry: "Hola todos! After a long and tiring flight, we arrived Quito save and well. Our first days we have spent very quietly, as we had some diffiulties with the altitude and jetlag. During those days, we only visited the old centre of Quito. As there wasn't that much to see and we weren't feeling 100% safe, we returned to our hostel quiet quickly... Tomorrow we're going to stand in the middle of the earth in El Mitad del mundo. Our first impression of ...
