Salome Trujillo talking on Independence Square, Quito Ecuador, filmed by Jonathan Poston [06:35]
Quito Ecuador Tour guide, Salome Trujillo on Quito's Independence Square, filmed by Jonathan Poston Quito Ecuador Tour guide, Salome Trujillo, talking on Quito's Independence Square or Plaza Grande : Presidential Palace, Arch bishop ( palace made for 538 people was donated to gov't which decided to use building as a commercial place ), Quito City Hall from the 1940s, Cathedral (the main church of the city Quito), Column of the Independence representing the heroes of August 10, 1809, which was the beginning of independence of Latin American countries from Spain. Ecuador got liberty from Spain on May 24, 1822 (led by two Venezuelans).. Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador were joined under the country name of Grand Colombia..Ecuador was part of that until the 1830s when Ecuador became its own country. The Column of Independence's symbols include the lion representing Spain with an arrow in the ribs indicating captivity. The cross on the column represents the introduction of the Catholic religion, but for the Indians it was used as a compass. The condor (almost extinct because people were killing them thinking they were eating their cows) is holding a broken chain which symbolizes liberty. On top is the Statue of Liberty, which is similar to the one in New York because it was made by the same person and was also a gift from France to Ecuador.
