Fundacion Guayasamin Museum - A Tribute to Artistic Talent
The Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum is located in Quito, Ecuador. This art museum is home to a large selection of intriguing artworks by Oswaldo GuayasamÃn. It also houses GuayasamÃn's private collection of art. GuayasamÃn is considered one of the greatest artists in Ecuador and his works are truly insightful. The Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum is situated on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. This it offers visitors great inspiration, both inside and outside its walls.
Established in 1977, the non-profit organization of Fundación GuayasamÃn acted to promote the masterpieces and ideology of Oswaldo GuayasamÃn. The foundation plays a major role in cultural aspects of Ecuador and has contributed to important events, concerts and publications. Essentially, it was GuyasamÃn's goal to create a comprehensive center of culture.
Oswaldo GuayasamÃn was born on 6 July 1919 in the city of Quito. He studied at Quito's School of Fine Art and launched his first exhibition in 1942. During his career as a sculptor and painter, Oswaldo received many awards and enjoyed great recognition. He passed away at the good age of 79 in 1999, many years after founding Fundación GuayasamÃn. Before his death this remarkable man donated his personal collection of artworks to the city of Quito and these are housed in the Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum. Art created by Oswaldo GuayasamÃn was particularly notable for the intense emotion and power expressed. As a major political activist, his works bring to life the hatred he had for totalitarian governments in Latin America. In his art you will see images of class division, political oppression, poverty and prejudice - topics which obviously weighed heavily on his mind. A piece that continues to receive much praise is GuayasamÃn's “La Edad de la Ira†or "The Age of Anger".
The Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum is divided into three different sections. In the El Museo Arqueologico, you will find Oswaldo's private pre-Columbian art collection. Other sections contain the artist's own works. The Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum is also concerned with hosting workshops and houses an impressive art library. Concerts and Exhibitions are frequently scheduled here. Visitors can also stroll through the gardens surrounding the museum and enjoy the marvelous view. The Fundación GuayasamÃn Museum is open from Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 am to 12:30 pm and 03:00 pm to 6:30 pm. It is also open on Saturday from 09:00 am to 12:30 pm.

I visited Quito in early 2005 and happened upon a serigrafia in an art galery there (Martsu Arte) named "Hombre." It was marked EA and signed by him. How many EA prints were kept by Guayasamin or his Foundation, of this particular print and how many "numbered" prints were in the total? It is a piece that receives comments from friends. The Gallery explained to me that it was released by the Foundation for sale and was unique as an EA. How many EAs were signed by the master?
