Miss International Title Claimed by Miss Ecuador

The Miss International beauty pageant has been running for 51 years, and for the first time in its history, Ecuador took top honors as Fernanda Cornejo from Quito was crowned Miss International 2011. While attractiveness is an important aspect of the annual Miss International beauty pageant, the event’s stated goal is to promote world peace, goodwill and understanding. Therefore much is expected from the winner during her reign – and 22-year-old Fernanda appears confident that she has what it takes to fulfill expectations.

The final evening of the event, culminating in the crowning of Miss International, took place in Chengdu, China, on 6 November 2011 and was an evening of unparalleled glamor, as contestants entertained the audience. The first place Grand Prix winner and Miss Style went to Fernanda Cornejo of Ecuador, with the first runner-up and winner of Miss Photogenic being Jessica Barboza of Venezuela. Second runner-up went to Tugsuu Idersaikhan of Mongolia; third runner-up was awarded to Desiree Del Rio De Jesus of Puerto Rico; and fourth runner-up went to Keity Mendieta Britton of Panama. Other awards presented at the event included Miss National Costume; Miss Friendship; Miss Expressive; Miss Elegant; Miss Talent; and Miss Internet.

Over the years, the Miss International Beauty Pageant has come to be known as the “Olympics of Beauty”, with delegates required to be diplomats for their countries on a regional and international level, getting involved in social activities, such as ecology campaigns and charity events. It was a tough decision for judges, as all participants were of a high caliber, but in the end Miss Ecuador stood above more than sixty contestants to take first place. In an interview after the competition, Fernanda expressed her delight at receiving the award, noting that she hoped her success would bring glory to her home country of Ecuador. The first person she called after receiving the award was her mother, so that they could share the joy and excitement of her achievement. No doubt Miss International 2011 will do her country proud during her one-year reign. As she said in her interview: “I will bring the crown and all the glory back home. Ecuador will be proud of me.”
